HOW DOES LEVITRA WORK?
Levitra (vardenafil HCL) is a medication that has been licensed to treat erectile dysfunction, which is the repeated inability to get or keep an erection firm enough for sexual intercourse.
Levitra is very effective at treating erectile dysfunction. The medication works by blocking a chemical that causes blood to flow out of the penis. More blood in the penis means an improved erection.
Like Viagra and Cialis, Levitra is a phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitor (PDE-5). All of these drugs function in essentially the same way. In smooth muscle cells, cGMP (cyclic guanosine monophosphate) mediates smooth muscle relaxation. The more cGMP, the more the muscles can relax, the more blood can flow in, and the better the erection. PDE-5 breaks down cGMP, so PDE-5 inhibitors like Levitra keep this from happening, helping to maintain high levels of cGMP.
Levitra's strong point is that it is very selective in attacking PDE-5 without affecting other isoenzymes. This allows a smaller dose of Levitra to have the same effect as a larger dose of Viagra (an average Levitra dose is 10mg while an average Viagra dose is 50mg), even though the two drugs essentially function the same way.
According to The Male Health Centres, Levitra and other PDE5 inhibitors act by mimicking or enhancing the natural process that occurs when a man becomes aroused. During this process, nitrous oxide is released by the nerves that service the penis, which promotes creation of cyclic guanosine monophosphate, or cGMP. This then creates an erection because cGMP causes relaxation of the smooth muscle within the penis, allowing for increased blood flow while also decreasing outflow.
Levitra should be taken an hour before sexual activity for maximum benefit to allow enough time for the process to take place. Levitra is available in pill form in dosages of 2.5mg, 5mg, 10mg and 20mg. A physician determines which dosage is best based on the severity of the erectile dysfunction.
Levitra is not an aphrodisiac and does not aid in increasing sexual desire. It only aids in the physiological process of sexual arousal. For best results, use Levitra in conjunction with sexual stimulation. Levitra is not intended to cause an erection on its own without the presence of sexual stimulation and should not cause instant arousal.
